Boy Scouts

Troop #128 has been a part of the youth and outreach ministry of St. Mary's In-The-Hills since 1975. Following a brief time of inactivity in the late 1980's, the Troop was re-activated in January, 1991 by Ken Gorris, Al Daisley and Donna Daisley, and has remained an integral part of Scouting in the Lake Orion community. St. Mary's also chartered Cub Scout Pack #12 for 6 years, and Venture Crew #128, which served High School and College students in a high-adventure, co-ed program for 5 years. When there is additional interest and leadership, both the Cub Scout Pack and the co-ed Venture Crew can be re-activated!

The leaders of Troop #128 have maintained a Scouting program designed to Deliver the Promise to boys ages 11 to 17 years, by providing monthly camping and outdoor activities, and in focusing on a Boy-run Program, which gives each Scout the opportunity to learn, grow and develop in skills and abilities.

Troop 128 recognizes that the best Scouting programs will closely follow the National Boy Scouts of America Policies, providing a Safe and Fun environment for Scouts and their Families. Adult leadership is Youth Protection trained, and maintains a youth program fully compliant with the Creating a Healthy Environment, Child and Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.

All of the Scouting programs at St. Mary's have included a strong focus on Duty to God and the God and Country Religious Emblems Study programs of the Episcopal Church. The God and Country programs are divided by school grade: God and Me 1st to 3rd grade; God and Family 4th and 5th grade; God and Church 6th-7th and 8th grade; and God and Life- 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades. God and Country programs are offered about every 2-3 years, and are open to any youth in the parish. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and Campfire Boys and Girls each have recognitions for young people earning their religious award of their faith. More than 15 young people have earned 21 religious emblem of the Episcopal Church at St. Mary's!

Since 1992, Troop 128 has hosted an annual Scout Sunday in the parish, with recognitions of religious emblems earned, as well as information on the status of the parish youth ministry served through the Scouting programs.

In 2008, the parish Scouting Co-ordinator was invited to serve on a panel of youth ministry options for parishes at the annual Episcopal Diocese Ministry Fair.

Troop 128 Meets on Tuesday nights, at the church, 6.45 pm - 8.30 pm.
